Welcome to Hermosa Beach
An iconic California beach town with retro vibes and a coveted culinary scene
Shakespeare asks, what’s in a name? In the case of Hermosa Beach, the answer is nothing less than the exact truth. Hermosa translates to ‘beautiful’ and that’s exactly what this iconic town is – beautiful, fun, and sophisticated. This charming Los Angeles beach town is small in size, at just over one square mile, but its personality and heart are as vast as the ocean it borders.
Hermosa’s compact size makes it a pedestrian paradise, and the award-winning culinary scene gives it a cache to rival its northern neighbor. Just five miles from the sprawling metropolis of LA, Hermosa Beach offers residents a chance to relax by the beach while still enjoying all the sophistication of a cosmopolitan city. Despite the small-town feel, Hermosa Beach offers varied neighborhoods to satisfy every taste, from North Hermosa to Hermosa Valley and Hermosa Hills.

Dining, Entertainment & Shopping
Downtown Hermosa is home to some of the town’s most dynamic culinary experiences. Chef Brendan Collins creates an elevated bar experience at Tower 12, a relaxed, retro-style bistro. After a day at the beach, head to Baja Sharkeez for vibrant Mexican fare and New American classics, perfect for satisfying the kind of hunger only fresh ocean air and wave-surfing can bring. With a curated sake menu, fresh Japanese cuisine, and a welcoming atmosphere, Japonica may become your favorite new spot for dinner, while the family-run Paisanos Pizza brings a true taste of authentic New York-style pizza and pasta to the South Bay.
Australia meets SoCal in the delightful Gum Tree boutique and cafe. This one-of-a-kind home and gift shop offers coastal decor with a touch of whimsy, not to mention a menu of flat whites and classic California fare with an Aussie twist. Surfers, aspiring or advanced, will delight in Becker Surfboards, a Hermosa Beach mainstay offering handmade boards. The east side of Hermosa brings more culinary standouts, including the retro Ocean Diner. Indulge in the fresh flavors of Peruvian cuisine, as well as imported Peruvian beer, at the dynamic El Pollo Inka.
Things to Do
Perhaps Hermosa’s favorite green space, Valley Park is a lovely spot with grassy knolls, perfect for family picnics, athletic courts, playgrounds, and annual performing arts events. Walk out to the end of Hermosa Beach Pier for a stunning view of the Santa Monica Bay – then around to see Los Angeles sprawling out in front of you. This landmark pier hosts summer concerts and films and features Pier Plaza, a pedestrian-centric center with shopping and elevated bistros, like Tower 12. Just down the street from the Pier, you’ll find the Hermosa Beach Farmers’ Market. Ring in the summer season with Fiesta Hermosa, this beach town’s most dynamic arts festival. Originally named Fiesta de los Artes, this Memorial Day festival changed its name to encourage the support of local Hermosa businesses and breweries.
